This is a fantastic initiative that really speaks to a professional body taking positive, values-based action to shape the future of the profession in such an affirming way. Through the creation of a safe, inclusive space for the sharing of experience, ideas and supportive discussion, Physio First is actively connecting practitioners across their developmental timeline, from students to the (very) seasoned, welcoming NHS and private sector physiotherapists to come together in a common cause.
My sense is that #skillexchange creates a sense of legacy for senior practitioners while providing an antidote to the disillusionment and isolation that has become all too prevalent amongst our newer colleagues. It harks back to a time when practice-based experience had a place at the table to stimulate mature, respectful discussion and consideration without the public censure that has become so prevalent – a time when the real human skills of the therapeutic interaction were recognised and valued even though they are not captured in an RCT.
I am so excited about the future of this concept, and if you are a physiotherapist or are studying physiotherapy, you will find this a rewarding way to connect with your peers, pass on your experience, learn new things and be a part of a vibrant and passionate community of practitioners.
The Skills Exchange certainly exceeded any expectation I might have had - it was fun, inspiring, practical, and completely safe, open, supportive and deeply confirming as we explored the patient scenarios together and experienced our similarities of process and our different angles all complementing each other perfectly. Definitely will be attending again and telling my friends.
