Learning objectives


  1. To learn about the use of Nordic walking using Activator Poles as a rehabilitation tool for a range of clinical applications
  2. Be aware of current clinical research for the use of Nordic Walking and understand the guidelines for specific clinical conditions
  3. To be aware of the indications and contraindiactions for Nordic Walking, and understand their safe use
  4. To learn correct technique of Activator Poles for Nordic Walking and how to modify this technique according to the requirements of your patients; have the opportunity to try them yourself
  5. To understand the design and correct set up for the Activator poles, and how to use them in seated, standing and pre-gait exercises

Tutor Biography

Martin Christie introduced Nordic walking to the UK in 2003, creating the first instructor training programmes based on the original Finnish concept. Nordic Walking UK has since trained over 5000 instructors from both fitness and medical fields. In 2017, Nordic Walking UK partnered with Canadian organisation Urban Poling which has trained over 3500 Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists in Canada. The Activator training in a UK is the result of a coming together of both organisations’ expertise.

Martin leads on the Activator programme and has delivered Nordic walking training for rehab purposes in a wide range of centres of excellence including Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre Headley Court, Guys and Thomas’s Cancer Rehab unit, Addenbrookes amputee department, St Georges NHS Trust Falls Services and has presented at Therapy Expo and at the inaugural Parkinsons UK Excellence Network conference.
